In early spring of 2022, the Ukrainian city of Bucha was attacked by Russian forces. Since the liberation, the city has been fighting for recovery and reconstruction. Now, Danish funding of almost DKK 26 million from EIFO (Denmark's Export and Investment Fund) and the Grundfos Foundation makes it possible to rebuild the city's water supply.

Lack of access to a safe supply of clean drinking water. This has been the reality for around 70,000 residents of the Bucha district in northwestern Ukraine since Russian troops invaded the district in February 2022, leaving the majority of the wells and water pumping stations damaged or destroyed.

Now, Denmark and the Grundfos Foundation are ready with important support for Bucha, which will receive almost DKK 26 million for the reconstruction of the region’s water supply. The Foundation’s contribution funding amounts to DKK 15.5 million (or just over 2 million EUR).

The inhabitants of Bucha have been deprived of one of the most basic prerequisites for human existence, namely access to clean water. A reliable water infrastructure is at least as important as hospitals and schools, so we are happy and proud to contribute to the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Kim Nøhr Skibsted, Executive Director, Grundfos Foundation

He and the Danish Minister of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov visited Bucha today, where Kim Nøhr Skibsted signed the agreement with the city’s mayor, Anatolii Fedoruk.

“Russia’s brutal and disgusting attack on Bucha has had enormous consequences for the city’s residents. I have visited the city and seen with my own eyes the destruction. Therefore, we must help rebuild their homes. With the agreement, we ensure clean drinking water and clearly show that Denmark supports Ukraine – no matter what. Thank you to the Grundfos Foundation for their courage and humanity. We will not be cowed by brutalities,” said Minister of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov.

As a state-owned financial institution, the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) acts as a driving force and an enabler for new endeavors and projects in Denmark and throughout most of the globe. The reconstruction of Ukraine is one of EIFO’s key tasks in recent years, and with this new funding, Denmark once again confirms its strong commitment.

We now have 21 projects in Ukraine, and I am proud that together with the Grundfos Foundation we can make a decisive contribution to securing Bucha's future water supply.
